The cause
Five lakh people are living in water that has not gone down for six weeks.
Since late June, monsoon rains have triggered flash floods and landslides across Assam. Over 5 lakh people have been affected across Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Nagaon. Homes are submerged, embankments have broken, and families are living on roads and embankment ridges with nothing they could carry out.
A hygiene kit containing sanitary napkins, innerwear, soap, washing powder, toothpaste and a toothbrush costs Rs. 1,000 and reaches one family. In standing floodwater it is the difference between coping and falling ill.
